In May 2026, Japan Airlines (JAL) unveils a remarkable addition to its international in-flight collection: the limited-edition “Single Malt Kujū JAL EXCLUSIVE 2026.”
More than just an in-flight offering, this release represents a new chapter in Japan’s evolving whisky story—one that brings a truly local, small-batch craft distillery onto the global stage.
Why Kujū, Why Now?
This exclusive expression is a rare non-peated single malt, crafted by marrying whisky aged for three years in ex-bourbon barrels with spirit matured in new American oak casks.
The result is elegant and inviting:
bright citrus notes reminiscent of fresh orange, layered with a gentle, lingering sweetness of vanilla.
Selected as part of JAL’s “Bringing Japanese Craft to the World” initiative (Vol. 15), this whisky was chosen not only for its quality, but for its ability to express a sense of place—something increasingly valued by discerning global travelers.
The Story Behind Kujū Distillery
Founded in 2021 in the serene highlands of Taketa City, Oita, Kujū Distillery is the prefecture’s only whisky distillery—and one of Japan’s most intriguing emerging producers.
Set at an altitude of 600 meters, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Aso-Kujū mountain range, the distillery benefits from cool temperatures and exceptionally pure spring water. These natural conditions contribute to a whisky that is both delicate and deeply expressive.
Craftsmanship is equally central to its identity. The distillery employs traditional pot stills made by Forsyths of Scotland, ensuring time-honored distillation methods are preserved. Its team has also trained under some of Japan’s most respected whisky producers, including Chichibu Distillery (home of Ichiro’s Malt) and Tsunuki Distillery.
The result is a house style that leans toward a refined fruitiness, balanced richness, and a clarity that speaks to both tradition and innovation.
